Second Level Domain Names A good discussion of how DNS resolves requests for a domain is located here. Second Level Domain names or SLD's generally must be three or more characters because the one and two character names have typically been reserved. In typical use the SLD in your domain name would represent your company name. Since competition for domain names has existed since 1993, many of the most desirable names have long since been registered. Search engine technology is re-defining the value of a domain name in that many search engines weight keywords in domain names as relevant to the content of a web site. In other words, lets say a company XYZ Manufacturing builds widgets and wants to put up a web site to sell their products. All else being equal, the pages at xyz.com will have less relevance to a a search based on the widget keyword than the pages at widget.com Choosing your domain name becomes very important because it appears that most consumers will run search queries when they are shopping for a product on-line. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) seeks to improve the ranking of a web site in search engine listings. Our sister company J&N Office Design provides SEO services |
